Founder's Weekend 2025

Founder's Weekend 2025

Schedule of Events

On Your Own: LUAG Exhibitions

Lehigh University Art Galleries presents the following exhibits to explore on your own during Family and Founder's Weekend.  Visit luag.org for more details.

Really Free: The Radical Art Of Nellie Mae Rowe
LUAG Main Gallery, Zoellner Arts Center
September 3–December 7, 2024
This exhibition of 58 works by the self-taught Georgia artist is set against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement in the South. Rowe (1900-1982) saw art making as a radical act of self-expression and liberation that took many forms including found-object installations, handmade dolls, chewing-gum sculptures, and hundreds of drawings. The focus of her creative output was a “Playhouse” where she welcomed visitors, situated along a major thoroughfare in Vinings, Georgia.

Organized by the High Museum of Art (Atlanta) from its leading collection of Rowe’s art, Really Free is the first major exhibition of her work in more than 20 years. The exhibition offers an unprecedented view of how she cultivated her drawing practice late in life following the deaths of her second husband and her longtime employer. Starting with colorful and at times simple sketches on found materials, the works move toward her most celebrated, highly complex compositions on paper. Through photographs and other references to her Playhouse, the exhibition is also the first to put her drawings in direct conversation with her art environment.

Support for this exhibition and publication is provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Major funding for this exhibition and publication is provided by Judith Alexander and Henry Alexander. Generous support for the national tour is provided by Art Bridges.

Change Makers!: Ideas Can Change the World
Alumni Memorial Gallery • Fairchild-Martindale Study Gallery • Siegel Gallery • Dubois Gallery • The Gallery at Rauch Business Center • The South Bethlehem Greenway
September 3, 2024–May 23, 2025
Ideas set in motion can change the world. This exhibition, drawn from LUAG’s extensive collection, highlights multiple forms of cultural change-making: the circulation of ideas, the evolving forces of labor and industry, advocacy through protest, fame, and the role of artists as the often “unacknowledged legislators of the world.” The exhibition includes interviews with local changemakers in the Lehigh Valley, gathered by Lehigh students, that reveal insights, strategies, and ambitions for positive change in our community.

Selections From the Permanent Collection
LUAG Lower Gallery, Zoellner Arts Center
September 3, 2024–May 23, 2025
Featuring selections from Lehigh University Art Galleries’ permanent collection of over 20,000 works of art, this exhibition highlights works from various time periods and cultures to support the museum’s mission to foster critical thinking, cultural understanding, and well-being through transformative experiences with art.

Picture of Health: Understanding Dementia Through Art
LUAG LAB: An Interdisciplinary Student Project Space
September 3–November 1, 2024
Following the research of Tiana Aldroubi ’24, this exhibition delves into the patterns present in artworks created by individuals with dementia. Leveraging machine learning and computer vision techniques, Aldroubi analyzed the artistic features of paintings done by individuals with and without dementia to find correlations and emerging patterns. With this research, Aldroubi hopes to gain insight into the effects of dementia on creativity and investigate how cognitive decline may be depicted in artwork.

On Your Own: Notations: Luis Miranda Jr.

A veteran of New York and national politics, Luis Miranda embodies the relentless spirit of progress of American immigrants. He shares a fascinating narrative of his life and career — from his early days as a radically minded Puerto Rican activist to his decades of political advice and problem-solving. Miranda recounts the thrill of the ascendency of Hamilton, created by his son Lin-Manuel, and he details the suffering after the devastation of Puerto Rico by Hurricane Maria. Amid the triumphs and challenges, Miranda examines what his experience reveals about our ever-changing politics, demographics, and society. Event is free; no tickets are required. Learn more.
